Whiskey

Old Fashioned

The original whiskey cocktail: spirit, sugar, bitters and a twist of orange.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Steps

  1. Add the syrup and bitters to a rocks glass (if using a sugar cube, muddle it with the bitters and a splash of water).
  2. Add the whiskey and a large ice cube.
  3. Stir for about 20 seconds until chilled.
  4. Express an orange peel over the drink and drop it in.

Garnish: Orange peel (a cocktail cherry is optional)

Manhattan

Rich, smooth and spirit-forward, stirred and served up.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Steps

  1. Add everything to a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir for about 30 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.

Garnish: Cocktail cherry

Whiskey Sour

Bright, tart and balanced, with an optional silky foam.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white (optional)

Steps

  1. Add everything to a shaker. If using egg white, shake without ice first for 10 seconds.
  2. Add ice and shake hard for 15 seconds.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Garnish: Cocktail cherry and an orange slice

Tequila

Margarita

Tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime: the classic, on the rocks.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1 oz orange liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec)
  • 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
  • Salt for the rim (optional)

Steps

  1. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass and dip it in salt, if you like.
  2. Add the tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice to a shaker with ice.
  3. Shake for 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into the glass over fresh ice.

Garnish: Lime wheel

Paloma

Mexico's favorite highball: tequila and grapefruit soda with a squeeze of lime.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 oz grapefruit soda
  • Pinch of salt

Steps

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice (salt the rim first if you like).
  2. Add the tequila, lime juice and a pinch of salt.
  3. Top with grapefruit soda and stir gently.

Mojito

Cool mint, lime and rum, lengthened with soda.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 6–8 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 oz club soda

Steps

  1. Gently press the mint with the syrup and lime juice in a highball glass (don't shred it).
  2. Add the rum and fill the glass with crushed or cubed ice.
  3. Top with club soda and stir gently from the bottom.

Garnish: Mint sprig and a lime wheel

Moscow Mule

Spicy ginger beer, vodka and lime, served ice-cold in a copper mug.

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 oz ginger beer

Steps

  1. Fill a copper mug (or highball glass) with ice.
  2. Add the vodka and lime juice.

Steps

  2. Shake very hard for 15–20 seconds to build the foam.
  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass or coupe.

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 3 oz tomato juice
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 dashes hot sauce

  1. Add everything to a shaker or mixing glass with ice.
  2. Roll gently back and forth between two glasses (or stir) until chilled; don't shake hard.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz chilled sparkling wine (brut or prosecco)
  • 3 oz fresh orange juice, chilled

Steps

  1. Pour the orange juice into a champagne flute.
  2. Slowly top with the sparkling wine (no stirring needed).

Garnish: Orange twist (optional)
